Inner Light Psychological Services provides neuropsychological evaluations for children, teens, and young adults.

Evaluations examine an individual’s psychological and neuropsychological functioning by assessing cognitive, learning/memory, behavioral, and social-emotional functioning as well as academic achievement in order to assist with diagnostic clarification, home and educational treatment planning.

Dr. Melissa assesses a wide range of mental health and learning disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, learning disorders, social and emotional disorders, intellectual disability, and other developmental and neurodevelopmental disorders. Her practice has roots in the neuropsychological testing and treatment of executive functioning, ADHD, anxiety, OCD, autism, and behavior dysregulation in children and teens.

Dr. Melissa has a particular interest in the neuropsychological assessment and treatment of executive functioning, ADHD, anxiety, OCD, and autism in females age 6-19 while sharing findings in understandable and concrete terms.

Testing batteries are individualized, guided by the needs of the individual, utilizing evidence-based practices and including the most relevant, valid, and reliable measures. Dr. Melissa provides final reports that are not cookie-cutter and includes recommendations selected specifically for your child and presented in a practical manner.

Dr. Melissa likes to work collaboratively with parents, schools, medical providers, and agencies to address concerns while providing practical and evidence-based recommendations so your child can be appropriately supported across settings. As such, she likes to provide a neutral ground to individuals, families, and schools.

When Evaluations May Be Helpful

To obtain a better understanding of cognitive functioning, including but not limited to: problem solving, language, attention, memory, visual-motor, organization/planning, social/emotional functioning, academic skills, and school functioning.

If you are questioning a learning disability, attention or executive functioning concerns, autism spectrum disorder, memory or language-based difficulty, or emotional, behavioral/psychiatric concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, mood changes).

Lack of, or minimal progress, despite mental health interventions.

Concern about misdiagnosis.

Social withdrawal, loss of motivation, inability to enjoy things, hopelessness.

Unexplained rapid or dramatic shifts in emotions.

A history of frequent or severe interpersonal problems.

Acting in uncharacteristic ways or displaying peculiar behaviors.

Emotion and/or behavior challenges that interfere with functioning.

If you have concerns about an upcoming transition to middle school, high school, or college and would like recommendations on how to best prepare and support your child.

What to Expect

Dr. Melissa's focus is to help individuals and their families better understand the client's strengths and weaknesses, neurocognitive functioning, and the impact on school, work, or daily functioning while providing and/or clarifying diagnoses when appropriate.

Before testing dates are scheduled, please plan for a free 15-20 minute consultative call to ensure that Dr. Melissa is an appropriate fit for your evaluation needs.

If fit is appropriate, a 60-90 minute parent intake interview will be scheduled to better understand the referral questions/concerns and to collect a detailed developmental history so Dr. Melissa can build an individualized testing/assessment plan.

Direct testing sessions with the client. The duration and amount of testing sessions are individualized based on client presentation and needs.

A comprehensive written report, which often includes a developmental history, clinical interviews, observations, testing/assessment results, interpretation, diagnoses and/or recommended special education classifications (when appropriate), and evidence-based recommendations written in practical and understandable terms.

Parent feedback session to go over the findings and recommendations while answering any questions.

At the conclusion of the evaluation, you should have a better understanding of how your child thinks and learns, including areas of strengths and vulnerabilities, and how you and the school can most effectively support them.
